Staya Mohan Joshi was a Nepalese writer and scholar who was popular for his research on the history and culture of Nepal. He was also appointed as chancellor of Nepal Bhasa Acdemy.

Early Life

Satya Mohan Joshi was born on 12 May 1920 A.D. to Shankar Raj and Raj Kumari Joshi. He was born in Lalitpur District of Nepal. He was taught alphabets at home by his parents. Satya Mohan Joahi was taught alphabets at home by his parents.

Educational Life

After learning alphabets at home, he was enrolled at Durbar High School in Kathmandu. He completed his bachelor degree in arts (BA) from Trichandra College and became the first director of the Archaeological and Cultural Department in 1959 AD. Then he established the Rastriya Naachghar—National Theatre in Kathmandu, the Archeological Garden in Patan, the Archeological Museum in Taulihawa, and the National Painting Museum in Bhaktapur.

Wife & Children

He got married with Radha Devi at the age of seventeen. He had three sons only. They are Bhaskar Mohan Joshi, Saroj Mohan Joshi, and Suman Mohan Joshi.

Career

Joshi went to China after King Mahendra’s coup in 1960 and started teaching Nepali at the Peking Broadcasting Institute. He did study on Araniko, a sculptor from the Malla dynasty who moved to China in early 1260 AD, while he was there. He used historical items linked to Araniko to build the Araniko White Dagoba Gallery in Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

He has written more than 60 books in many different areas. Some of them are Hamro Lok Sanskriti (Madan Puraskar in 1956), Nepali Rastriya Mudra (Madan Puraskar in 1960), Karnali Lok Sanskriti (a collection of study papers), Charumati, Sunkeshari, Majipha Lakhe, and Bagh Bhairab.

Recognition

A national postal stamp featuring his portrait was released in 2021. A total of 100,000 copies, each valued at NPR 10, were printed. In September 2019, the Nepal Rastra Bank released three new coins with denominations of Rs 100, Rs 1,000, and Rs 2,500, showcasing Joshi’s likeness to celebrate his centenary. On 17 November 2021, Joshi became the inaugural recipient of Nepal’s electronic passport. A road in Lalitpur was designated in his honor. His biography, titled Satyamohan, was published on 18 March 2022. The biography was authored by Girish Giri, a writer and journalist.

Death

Joshi passed away at the age of 102 on 16 October 2022 at KIST Hospital in Lalitpur. In accordance with his intentions, his body was bequeathed to a hospital for research purposes. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan, and other leaders rendered their homage. The funeral of Joshi was conducted with state honors.

His astrological birth chart (china or janma-kundali in Nepali) was burned, alongside his remains, at Shankhamul Ghat by his sons Anu Raj Joshi and Purna Raj Joshi. The ashes were then scattered in the Bagmati River, in accordance with Hindu traditions. The Government of Nepal declared a one-day public holiday on 18 October 2022 to commemorate his death.
