Biography of Madhav Prasad Ghimire

One of the last of the Nepali literary figures from the older generation, Madhav Prasad Ghimire was one of the greatest figures in Nepali literature. Ghimire was not only a playwright and essayist, but he was also known as Rastra Kavi, which is the national poet.

Madhav Prasad Ghimire was born on October 22, 1919, and passed away on August 18, 2020, at the age of one hundred, at his home in Kathmandu due to respiratory issues. His cremation took place at Pashupati Aryaghat with the utmost respect from the state. In addition to that, Ghimire held the rank of honorary Brigadier General in the Nepali Army. The works of Rabindranath Tagore served as a source of inspiration for him.

His childhood and teenage years were spent in the Lamjung District, which is located in the hills. A gradual progression of Ghimire’s writing career ended in 1946, when he was appointed to the post of editor of the Gorkha Patra. Other journals, such as Sharada and Udaya, were among those in which he first began publishing his work.

Between the years 1979 and 1988, Ghimire served as the Vice Chancellor of the Royal Nepal Academy. From 1988 to 1990, he served as the Chancellor of the institution. While he was in office, he was responsible for leading delegations to Bangladesh, China, and Russia. In recognition of his work, he had been honoured with a number of prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Academy Medal, the Shree Prasiddha Praval Gorkha Dakshinabahu, the Bhanubhakta Award, and the Tribhuwan Pragya Puraskar.

Ghimire is widely regarded as a source of inspiration in Nepali literature due to his widespread popularity, reputation for excellence, and widespread acclaim. Over the course of 67 years, he was writing songs and poems, and he continued to do so even to the last stage of life. Poems, long narrative poems, lyrical-epic poems, and ballads are some of the forms of poetry that he has written. He made a significant contribution to the development of Nepali literature. His poems are praised as manifestations of the Nepalese way of life in the first edition of Modern Nepali Poems, which was published in 1972 by the Royal Nepal Academy. The Aphnai Bansuri Aphnai Gita, Asvatthama:Gitinatak, Gauri, Indrakumari, Rajesvari, and Rashtra-Nirmata are among the masterpieces that have received the most praise from viewers.
